Heartrate Monitor is a biofeedback application made to mimic the function of a stethoscope. Though it doesn’t give you access to heart sounds like those lub … dub ….. lub … dub….. that you can listen to when using a stethoscope. But it can calculate your heart beats per minute (bpm).
Download it on your computer then simply open the application and press any button on the keyboard every time you feel a pulse from your wrist or throat.

Heartrate Monitor at start up

Display result of a user's heartrate at 76 bpm
The monitor was a school project I made while observing the physical property of heart sounds (S1 and S2), the same period I started programming in Action Script in 2006 at CMP, University of Westminster. For an interactive installation, Kit Godfrey (my friend) and I set up a meditation room, which was totally dark. Projector showed Breathing Instruction based on Anapanasati Sutta meditation style (in-and-out breathing control). The simple uses of text and background colour with slow moving effect create a calming environment turning the installation space into a room for meditation.
The users are challenged by the condition of psychological and technological requirements. The work draws on ideas of human control, consciousness and subjectivity while interacting with multimedia and interactive technologies raising awareness of their own bio-body and well-being.
